For many of us, the end of summer signals the end of the vacation season. The kids are back in school, work is ramping up again after a (hopefully) slower summer pace, and the pumpkin spice lattes have come out of the dark.

1. Banff National Park, Canada

Banff National Park is a stunningly beautiful place to visit any time of year. Still, the fall shoulder season offers visitors the chance to enjoy the park's breathtaking scenery without dealing with the crowds descending on Banff during peak tourist season. Plus, the tickets are cheaper!

You can save even more money by renting an RV or camping in one of Banff's many campgrounds; both options are significantly cheaper than staying in a hotel. And with so much to see and do in Banff; hiking and biking in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter—you'll never get bored!

2. Maui, Hawaii

Maui is another excellent destination for budget-minded travelers searching for beautiful scenery and outdoor activities.

Airfare to Maui is the cheapest in September and October, so this is an ideal time to plan your trip. Once you're on the island, you can save money by renting a condo or house instead of staying in a hotel. With it, you'll even have access to your own kitchen! If the rental property or condo is located in a tourist location, take the time to drive a few miles out of your way before picking up groceries. You'll find greater pricing and variety, not to mention warehouse clubs and farmers' markets, if you go a bit farther.

4. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
