Black Natural Hairstyles that Inspire: Loose Curls & Short Cuts

Black natural hairstyles have been a part of Black identity for centuries. Our styles are not only an individual expression but connect us to a rich history of sacred traditions. At one point in time, our ancestors had a style for every occasion, and whether we realize it or not, we carry an inherent desire to honor these traditions.

One of the many beauties of natural Black hair is its versatility. No two textures are the same, so there’s a great opportunity for eccentricity and expression through our natural locks. One moment we can rock a cute and coily TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro), and the next day wear 20-inch box braids. The options are endless, but with such a wide selection, finding looks can be challenging. In Part I of this series, we’ve curated a list of Black Natural Hairstyles to try this year; read on to find your perfect match.

Loose Natural Hairstyles

Loose natural Black hair is defined as non-processed hair that is not loc’d. In recent years, there was a surge of Black women who decided to go natural by growing out their relaxer or through the Big Chop. As a result, women everywhere became familiar with their natural textures ranging from 3A to 4C. When selecting a style for your loose natural tresses, consider your preference for the level of upkeep. Styles range from Wash and Gos to Twist Outs.

Twist Out

Use the LOC method to twist your hair, sit under a dryer or wear the twist as a style for a few days to dry. Once you unravel the twists, you have a twist out. No two twist outs are the same, and they’re pretty simple to achieve.
